Richmond is Virginia’s capital city and sits at the head of the James River. Former Virginia governor Douglas Wilder, the country’s first African-American governor, was sworn in as the city’s mayor in 2005.

Like all cities in Virginia, Richmond is an independent city and has much to offer. Fine arts enthusiasts can take in a night at the ballet, symphony, or opera. Sports fans can catch a Richmond Braves minor league baseball game at The Diamond. The city’s Monument Avenue features native son and Wimbledon, U.S. Open, and Australian Open winner Arthur Ashe. The capital building, completed in 1788, was designed by Thomas Jefferson and is one of the oldest statehouses in continuous use. Virginia Commonwealth University attracts new students and residents to the area each year.

Several historic districts endure in the city of Richmond. The Fan District, named after the street pattern around a local park, covers over 100 city blocks and is the largest Victorian community in America. Boulevard District offers renovated apartments and townhouses built in the early part of the twentieth century, and Court End is home to many lawyers. Tobacco Row, once home to many warehouses and factories, now boasts popular residential lofts and retail space overlooking the river.
