Hanover County, with a population of roughly 86,000, is located just north of Richmond, VA. Its proximity to both I-95 and I-295 put it an hour’s drive from Colonial Williamsburg and a two hours’ drive from both Washington, DC and Virginia Beach. It is served by the Richmond International Airport (RIC).
Two of the county’s most famous residents were Patrick Henry and Henry Clay. The county was also the site of several Civil War battles, including the Seven Days Battle and the Battle of Cold Harbor. A number of historic buildings, like the Hanover County Courthouse (1735) and the Hanover Tavern (1780), still remain standing as testament to the county’s rich history.
Hanover County’s excellent public school system is the fourteenth largest in Virginia. Its fourteen elementary schools, four middle schools, and four high schools are all fully accredited, and boast a drop-out rate of less than 1%. Randolph Macon College, a co-ed private liberal arts college, is also located in Hanover County.
The County’s community calendar of events is anchored by the Hanover Tomato Festival, held every June to celebrate the world-famous Hanover Tomato. But there’s always plenty to do. Play a round of golf at one of the county’s three public golf courses. Attend a wine tasting at the James River Cellars Winery, winner of the 2005 Governor’s Cup. Tour Civil War earth works at 75-acre North Anna Park or 50-acre Cold Harbor Battlefield Park, or simply enjoy the great outdoors at 232-acre Pole Green Park or 203-acre Poor Farm Park. The more adventurous will not want to miss a trip to Paramount’s Kings Dominion, which offers a wide variety of roller coasters and thrill rides.
